Enhancing Vibrancy with Holiday Cheer

Downtown Wichita is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation that amplifies the energy, capital, and growth of downtown by empowering residents, visitors, and businesses to explore the possibilities of our city’s core.

The Challenge

Downtown Wichita needed a design for their perennial holiday banners that incorporated their brand standards and brought vibrancy to the downtown streetscape.

The Solution

The design draws on classic holiday imagery, iconic Wichita landmarks and symbols unique to the state of Kansas, tied together by engaging and festive messaging.

The design centers around Downtown Wichita’s brand standards. It utilizes the organization’s primary sans-serif typeface and vibrant color palette to reinforce brand awareness in the downtown Wichita area.

To deliver a design that resonates with the residents, visitors and businesses of downtown Wichita, the concept outlines three core categories; holiday imagery, Wichita landmarks and Kansas symbolism. These categories helped to identify visual elements that contribute to the design and connect with the audience.

The final design brings together the holiday imagery with the landmarks of Wichita and symbolism of Kansas to create a vibrant, eye-catching design. Two sets of banners were developed to fit two different street pole sizes.

The small banners are a simpler design that uses the visual elements as patterns, emulating holiday wrapping paper. In contrast, the large banners the a vertically-stacked approach. The top half of the designs are anchored by one of the four Wichita landmarks and the festive messaging. The bottom half of the design interchanges between visual elements from the three core categories and geometric patterns such as triangles, diamonds and crosses. Both halves work together to emulate the popular “ugly Christmas sweater” aesthetic.
